Walking Tours

lThe museum leads a number of tours of historic areas in the town and county of Culpeper. Program information is available on this website and on our Facebook page. Members receive advance notice of all upcoming programs. 

Group walking tours are available on request subject to the museum’s schedule and  the availability of its staff and volunteers. Minimum group size is 7 people; maximum group size is 14. A minimum of two weeks advance notice is required.

Non-vaccinated museum visitors, including children under the age of 12, should follow the Center for Disease Control’s guidelines on masking and social distancing when attending our programs.

 

 

Attendees should bring water, wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for weather conditions. To register, follow the registration button for each program. Attendance for each tour is strictly limited. All tours start at the Museum of Culpeper History unless otherwise noted in the tour description.

Culpeper Walks: Washington & Lafayette

Two of the most important figures in the Revolutionary War were General George Washington and General Marquis de Lafayette and both of these great men have important connections to Culpeper. Washington and Lafayette’s ties to Culpeper are examined in this downtown Culpeper tour which highlights the pathways and important associations that each of these men had with Culpeper, especially along Main (Coleman) Street. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes. Attendees should bring water, wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for weather conditions. Registration fee $10 per person.

This North Main Street Culpeper tour covers the development of North Main Street from 1749, when a young George Washington identified the location as a “high and pleasant situation.” See Culpeper grow through the colonial era to the Civil War, and beyond into the twentieth century. Learn about the major buildings and businesses, along with some of the important individuals who had businesses and residences in the North Main Street corridor from Davis to Edmondson Street. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes. Attendees should bring water, wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for weather conditions. The registration fee for each walking tour is $12.50, and attendance is limited

Culpeper Walks – Mystery & Mayhem in Culpeper

Peer into the the strange, curious, and disturbing elements of Culpeper’s past in this walking tour of downtown. Hear stories of duels, tragic accidents, mysterious organizations, and more.

Tour will start at the Museum of Culpeper History.

The tour will last approximately two hours. Participants should wear comfortable shoes, bring their own water, and dress appropriately for weather conditions. Registration fee $15.00 per person.

Total tour route is approximately 1 mile one way; this is NOT a loop tour. Route will be along city streets and sidewalks.

Please note that the content of this tour will address themes of violence and may not be appropriate for all ages.

This is NOT a ghost tour.

The museum will make the sole decision to cancel in case of inclement weather.

Attendees may be photographed for use in museum promotional and marketing material.

Culpeper Walks: The Battle of Culpeper Court House

Few people know the details of the Battle of Culpeper Court House, fought in and around the town of Culpeper on September 13, 1863. Learn how violent conflict came to Culpeper’s very doorstep during the Civil War and what it meant for the community on this 160th anniversary tour.

Tour will start at Memorial Park, corner of Wine Street and Old Brandy Road, in Culpeper.

The tour will last approximately 90 minutes. Participants should wear comfortable shoes, bring their own water, and dress appropriately for weather conditions. Registration fee $12.50 per person.
