One of the most important sources for a community's traditions is the history of its churches. There is probably no other public institution in Culpeper County that has claimed such strong allegiance. In fact, one of the best ways of understanding the involvement of Culpeper County citizens in wars, reform movements, benevolent societies, and moral crusades remains the narrative of the religious life of these people. This book records the traditions surrounding those churches in Culpeper which were founded prior to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861.
