Rixeyville

LOCATION: 9040 Rixeyville Rd., Rixeyville

Rixeyville is named for the Rixey family who arrived here in the early 1800s from Fauquier County. Revolutionary War veteran Richard Rixey, with his four sons, John, Presley, Charles, and William, purchased thousands of acres from the Pendleton family. Pleasant Hill, now Rixey Manor, built about 1809 by Charles Rixey, still stands nearby.  In 1818, Rixeyville, described as “situated handsomely on a healthy and high position” was established when the postal service began near here in a log cabin. From the 1870s to 1994 the post office primarily operated out of “Maw and Paws” store, before moving to its present location. Culpeper County Rixey descendants include Rear Admiral Presley M. Rixey, Surgeon General of the U. S. Navy, and Eppa Rixey, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer.
