Colonel John Green of Liberty Hall

John Green was born to Robert and Eleanor Dunn Green at Liberty Hall in 1730. He married Susanna Blackwell in 1756 and they had eight children. He served Culpeper in the St. Mark’s Parish Vestry and as a House of Burgesses member. In 1775, he led the regular rifle company of the Culpeper Minutemen as a Captain in the 1st VA Reg. By 1778, he was promoted to Colonel, assigned to the 10th VA Reg, later with the 6th VA Reg until the end of the war. Gen. Henry Lee referred to Green as “one of the bravest of the brave.” The Continental Congress commended Green for meritorious achievement, and he was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati. Green died in 1793 from old war wounds and was buried at Liberty Hall, then reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery in 1911.

John Green commanded one of the first companies of Minute Men in Culpeper County and later organized and commanded a company in the Continental Line. He was commended by the Continental Congress and directed to be presented a sword for meritorious service.
Records of the Committee of Safety for September 18, 1775 show the regulars under Capt. John Green, drawing 15 rifles. Of all the regular companies in Virginia, Green’s was the first to arrive in Williamsburg and pass inspection. He became the senior captain of the Virginia Continental Line and his company assigned to the First Virginia Regiment on October 21st of 1775.
