Norman’s Grocery

LOCATION: 9496 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper

Lewis Henry and Mary Jackson Tutt, African American entrepreneurs, founded Norman’s Grocery in 1894 six-hundred yards east of this site near their home in Norman. After a fire destroyed the original store in 1908, they relocated here to the former Norman Post Office building. In 1949, their son, Lewis William, and his wife Sadie took over and operated it as a grocery that welcomed people of all backgrounds. Lewis W. Tutt Jr. later managed the store until his passing in 2012. Afterwards, Lewis’ brother, Reva Tutt continued to operate the store. Norman’s Grocery has thrived under three generations of family ownership, spanning almost 130 years.
