Culpeper County, named in honor of Thomas Lord Culpeper, was formed in 1748 from Orange County. Its original territory embraced what is now Culpeper, Madison, and Rappahannock Counties. St. Mark's had been formed eighteen years previously through a division of St. George's Parish.
In addition to being a history of the St. Mark's Parish and Culpeper County, this volume is actually a genealogist's dream book. Both Dr. Slaughter and Mr. Green had family history uppermost in mind in their compilations. As a result, numerous family histories are scattered throughout the book, as well as considerable additional data including will and marriage records.
